HACC’s Kids Discovery Days focus on engineering, green technology

HARRISBURG – Youngsters ages 7-12 can experience the exciting world of engineering and green technology during two Discovery Day programs offered at HACC’s Midtown 2 at 1500 N. Third St.
“Discover Engineering” will be offered from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, Feb. 18, and “Discover Green Technology” will be offered from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, March 17. The cost per student for each program is $49.
Participants will learn first-hand about opportunities in the engineering and green technology fields and explore related activities.
In “Discover Engineering,” students will form teams to explore and build a circuit; learn about Computer Aided Drafting by working through an exercise creating a solid model of an animated robot; and build a solar powered vehicle. The final activity will be a “dream challenge” in which teams will create an engineering product for the year 2050. The teams will build a model and give a presentation. The winners receive a candy bar.
Students who sign up for “Discover Green Technology” will design and build numerous turbine blades to study wind power, using a stop watch, measuring distance and calculating velocity to determine the best design; work through four exercises to learn about solar power; and make a working clock using soda, fruit juice and water to demonstrate fluid power. The final activity will be a “dream challenge” in which teams create an environmentally friendly product for the year 2050. Each team will build a model and give a presentation. Winners receive a candy bar.
To register, call 717-780-2414 or go to the noncredit registration office in the Welcome Center on the second floor of the Cooper Student Center on the campus.
