UMUC, HACC partner to provide pathway to bachelor’s degree

Agreement eases transition for local students seeking to pursue 4-year education

GETTYSBURG – An agreement between the University of Maryland University College (UMUC) and HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, gives students a pathway to earn a bachelor’s degree.
Officials from the two institutions signed the pact during a ceremony Thursday, Feb. 23, in the Robert C. Hoffman Community Room of HACC’s Gettysburg Campus.
“This new agreement offers our students the opportunity to earn a bachelor’s degree by seamlessly transferring credits to UMUC,” said HACC President John J. “Ski” Sygielski, Ed.D. “The agreement also includes a reverse transfer option that allows HACC students who have not completed an associate degree to transfer UMUC credits back to HACC toward a two-year degree.”
Sygielski continued, “HACC has transfer agreements with more than 80 four-year institutions, and we welcome the opportunity to provide additional options for our students,” he said.
“UMUC is proud to partner with HACC as we continue to build alliances with our fine community colleges nationwide,” said UMUC President Susan C. Aldridge. “These alliances help students make a smooth transition to a four-year degree program and take another step toward a brighter and more promising future.”
UMUC has a team dedicated to supporting students who transfer from community colleges in Maryland and nationwide. Since establishing its first alliance agreement in 1996, the university has signed agreements with all 16 of Maryland’s community colleges. University leaders estimate that more than half of UMUC’s enrolled students transfer from two-year schools.
