'Rock Out @ HACC: Battle of the Bands' features six acts performing at HACC's Lancaster Campus

Bands to compete for cash, professional studio recording session

LANCASTER – Bands representing a variety of styles, from heavy metal to country music, indie and folk rock, will play the first “Rock Out @ HACC: Battle of the Bands” from 6-9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012, at the Lancaster Campus of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College.
The public is invited to attend the performances in the East Building of the campus at 1641 Old Philadelphia Pike, Lancaster. Tickets are $5 at the door, or $3 for students of any college or high school who present their school identification.
Jill Markley, adjunct music faculty who has been teaching at HACC for more than eight years, said the idea for the show began to take shape over the past several years.
“We've had many talented students on campus but they had no outlet,” Markley said. “We thought this would be a great chance to showcase their talent.”
The bands feature a mixture of high school and college-aged performers from Lancaster-area schools such as Hempfield and Lampeter-Strasburg high schools as well as Lancaster Bible College, Millersville University, Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology and West Virginia University.
Participating bands will play at the following times:
-- 6 p.m., The Big Game
-- 6:30 p.m., Levi Road
-- 7 p.m., Voice of the Martyr
-- 7:30 p.m., The Shakies
-- 8 p.m., Things behind the Sun
In determining the winner, a panel of judges will assess performance and musical quality, appearance, audience interaction and other criteria. Each band will play for 15 to 25 minutes.
The winner will receive five hours of studio time at Soundworks Recording and Productions in Hanover and a photo shoot at 911 Photo Graphics in Lancaster. The top three bands will also receive cash prizes.
The show is being presented by the Lancaster Campus Student Government Association. Drums, Etc. in Lancaster donated equipment and studio space for participants to rehearse for the show.
