Lula Washington Dance Theatre to perform at HACC’s Live at Rose Lehrman

Show tickets available for Feb. 13 performance

HARRISBURG – The Lula Washington Dance Theatre (LWDT) – founded by, Lula Washington, who choreographed the computerized movements for the digital characters in the 2009 film, “Avatar” – performs at HACC’s Live at Rose Lehrman on Wednesday, Feb 13, 2013, at 7:30 p.m., on the Harrisburg Campus of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College.

The LWDT choreography mixes athleticism, performance art, acting, jazz, ballet and street dance styles to reflect the African-American experience, culture and history. Washington and the troupe will present an evening of powerful and high-energy dancing that features the selections: “Love is…,” “We Wore the Mask,” “Ode to the Sixties” and other works. There will be a talkback with Washington and the dance company following the program.

Washington, an Academy Award-winner, is known for choreographing the ritual movement and body language for the indigenous people, Na’vi, in James Cameron’s “Avatar,” and for choreographing movements in Disney's “The Little Mermaid.”

LWDT was founded in 1980 by Lula and Erwin Washington in the inner city area of South Los Angeles, Calif. Since that time, the group has become an internationally-acclaimed African-American contemporary dance company. The New York Times describes their shows as “rousing, infectiously enthusiastic performances by fine dancers.”

The group has toured the United States and the world, with a recent tour taking them to multiple locations in Russia.
Show tickets are $39 for adults and $19 for students. To order tickets, call 717-231-ROSE (7673) or go to www.LiveatRoseLehrman.org.

The Lula Washington Dance Theatre is sponsored by the Lois Lehrman Grass Foundation, HACC Alumni Association, The HACC Foundation, The Hershey Co., McCormick Family Foundation, The Foundation for Enhancing Communities – Rose Lehrman Fund and The Franklin H. and Ruth L. Wells Foundation. Grant support is provided by the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation, Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and the Richmond Foundation administered through the PNC Charitable Trust Grant Review Committee.
