Directed by Theatre Professor Marnie Brennan, “Beyond Therapy” takes the audience into the lives of two singles seeking love who find sanity (sort of) in this madcap comedy by one of America's funniest playwrights.
Prudence's therapist swears a lot and calls her nasty names; Bruce's shrink encourages barking as a form of self-expression. When a personal ad brings them together, the hapless couple must come to their senses and overcome their zany therapists' “help” to find romance in a whacked-out world.
The characters exist in a world where everything is permitted and this makes it very difficult for them to figure out the best way to find happiness. They spend a lot of time wavering, trying to work through things with their therapists, but ultimately each one has to decide whether or not to compromise on issues that are important to them.
As bizarre as the situations are, we find ourselves reflected in the characters’ dilemmas, and that empathy is where the comedy comes from.
The “Beyond Therapy” cast includes Bruce, played by Thomas Abraham; Prudence, played by Christina Wood; Dr. Stuart Framingham, played by Sean McCormack; Mrs. Charlotte Wallace, played by Nicki Porter; Bob, played by Sean Hackman, and Andrew, played by Adam Newborn.
“Beyond Therapy” features an abstract 1980s-inspired set designed by Dave Olmsted, HACC Theatre Scenic Designer/Production Manager, complemented by lighting designed by Lori Friedlander, Theatre Technical Director, and costumes designed by HACC Theatre Instructor, Paul Foltz.
