HACC networking event for women entrepreneurs to address first-year challenges

Women thinking about establishing their own business can find out what to expect during their first year from an entrepreneur whose success in part came from the help she received through HACC’s Institute of Entrepreneurial Studies

Leading this month’s informal networking series is Karen Deklinski, now the owner of three small businesses, including Perfectly Pennsylvania, a specialty retail store at Harrisburg International Airport.

Deklinski plans to focus her comments on being prepared and diligent with cash flow at the session from noon-1:30 p.m. Friday, March 14, in Suite 231 of HACC’s Penn Center. 349 Wiconisco St.

“You need to know where every penny goes and where it comes from,” Deklinski says. “It is essential to develop good financial habits early on and to truly make them habits.”

Deklinski has broad experience that will translate into a dynamic conversation with participants, says Lisa Steffen, HACC business counselor.

“Karen has a broad experience level that will translate into a dynamic conversation with our participants,” Steffen says. “She has overcome many of the hurdles faced by female entrepreneurs, including preparing a business plan, securing financing, identifying markets and business promotion.”

A new element of the Women’s Talkabouts is monthly sponsorship for growing businesses. Hosting the March session will be Julie McNelly, owner of JAG Lifestyle Coaches, LLC, based in Lancaster.

The Women’s Talkabouts will continue through the spring semester with Rose Brown, of B.O.U.N.C.E. (Business Opportunities Unlimited Networking Coaching Education), facilitating “How to get your foot in the door” on Friday, April 25. On Thursday, June 12, the topic will be “How image impacts success.”

The free, informal networking series, which is offered by HACC’s Institute of Entrepreneurial Studies, grew out of the annual Women on the Move conference sponsored by HACC. Women business owners interested in attending any of the free sessions should call 221-1311 to reserve a seat. Participants are encouraged to bring a brown bag lunch. HACC will provide a dessert and beverage.
