HACC, PNC Foundation Announce New Initiative to Diversify Local Police and Emergency Medical Technicians

$112,500 grant will help provide scholarships for Black students enrolled in HACC’s Police Academy or EMT Program

HARRISBURG, Pa. – HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, and the PNC Foundation unveiled a new effort that will seek to build a more diverse police and emergency medical technician talent pipeline for the region.

As announced today, the PNC Foundation will fund this effort through a $112,500 grant over three years. HACC will use the funding to focus on recruitment and training of 36 low- to moderate-income Black students in the College’s Municipal Police Academy and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Program at the Senator John J. Shumaker Public Safety Center on HACC’s Harrisburg Campus.

“Thanks to this collaboration with HACC, we will be one step closer to ensuring that our heroic first responders reflect the communities they serve,” said Jim Hoehn, PNC regional president in Central Pa. “This initiative brings PNC’s focus on diversity and inclusion together with our belief that education is a force for economic and social mobility.”

This grant is part of PNC’s Community Benefits Plan announced last April, which is inclusive of a previously announced commitment of more than $1 billion to support economic empowerment opportunities for Black Americans and low- and moderate- income communities. The Community Benefits Plan will provide at least $88 billion in loans, investments and other financial support to benefit low- and moderate-income individuals and communities, people and communities of color, and other historically marginalized individuals and communities, over a four-year period.

John J. “Ski” Sygielski, MBA, Ed.D., HACC’s president and CEO, said, “HACC is grateful for the support from the PNC Foundation that will enable us to provide new career opportunities for members of our Black community. Using these funds provided by the PNC Foundation, the HACC Foundation will award scholarships to fully cover all tuition and educational costs associated with these programs. Since one of HACC’s core values is ‘inclusivity,’ this initiative exemplifies our authentic and action-oriented commitment to this value.”

Those interested in applying for the full-ride scholarships should contact the HACC Foundation for more information via email at foundation@hacc.edu.
